Farm Crew Openings

Contact Name
Chuck Wooster, farm owner
Details

We're now in the process of hiring two farmhands to join us for the 2023 growing season.

The work at Sunrise is primarily focused on certified-organic vegetable production, though the eight-person Sunrise crew is part of everything from seeding vegetables to slaughtering chickens to maple sugaring to light carpentry. Our 400-member CSA is entirely on-farm pickup, so you will have a chance to interact with CSA members whether you’re restocking the kale or selling lamb sausage. The job is 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4 PM with a half hour off for lunch. The positions start in April and runs through October.

Qualifications

-We work in rain, sun, snow, wind, heat, and cold—preparedness and a positive attitude are essential for success. We also shift frequently from one task to another, so an ability to transition efficiently is important.

-We aim to work hard during work hours and then knock off at a reasonable time. You must be able to put in a solid eight hours of effort every weekday, lift heavy objects, and deal with whatever comes along. You also need to be able to work closely with other people, since most activities require joint effort.

-You don’t need to have prior farm experience, though that is helpful.

Benefits

-This is a paid position, starting at $15/hour. We'll pay more for experienced hands.

-All the fresh, organic vegetables you can eat; deep discounts on meats and cheeses and other items we sell; unlimited fresh air; sunshine as available.

-The farm is just two miles from White River Junction, the cultural hub of east-central Vermont, and eight miles from Hanover, New Hampshire, home of Dartmouth College. The farm is two hours from Boston, three hours from Montreal, and four hours from New York City.

Application

We prefer an in-person work interview whenever possible. Send an email and resume to [email protected]. We fill jobs on a rolling basis, and as of October 2022 are looking to fill two spots.

New Village Farm Harvest Festival

Come on down to the farm for Harvest Festival! The day will be full of activities and yummy treats to get into the spirit of the fall season.

We'll be pressing cider, making prints, learning about seed-saving, and more. Show off your Halloween costume if you'd like! Free admission with activities by donation to benefit the farm and our programming.

Bring the whole family! Bring friends! We look forward to seeing you there.

Year-Round Indoor Salad Gardening with author Peter Burke

Winter is coming! Does the idea of buying jet-lagged lettuce from California make you weary? Peter Burke, the author of Year-Round Indoor Salad Gardening, devised an elegant and affordable way to grow his own fresh greens year-round. He will be at the Brattleboro Food Cooperative on Saturday, November 5th from 2:30-4:00 to show you how. If you want to grow salad greens indoors, whatever the weather, without special equipment, Peter’s class is the place for you!

Turkey Slaughter and Processing Workshop

At this slaughter and processing workshop, participants will learn how to slaughter, butcher and process turkey in a way to get the best results for a succulent bird. Wings, breasts and thighs all need different temperatures and times to cook. Cooking the whole bird makes for dry breasts, burnt wings tips, and everyone fighting over the dark meat. Buy whole turkeys directly from farmers and learn how to cook the bird in the way that makes the best meal at this workshop!
