Saturday/Sunday May 20-21, 2023 - 9am-5pm - Organic Beekeeping for Beginners -Metta Earth Institute - 334 S. Geary Rd., Lincoln, VT

Learn about the current state of the honeybee and the beekeeping industry, as well as alternatives to the failing status quo. Designed for the rank beginner, but beneficial for those with several years experience, we cover honey bee biology, resources for sourcing bees, choosing an apiary site, and the tools and equipment you will need. Safe, nontoxic, and effective methods for controlling hive pests and diseases such as mites and foulbrood will also be covered, as well as tips on successfully overwintering hives. Whether you are looking to use fewer chemicals, or are committed to keeping bees organically, this course is for you. The class will be punctuated with visits to the bee yard and the opportunity for hands-on experience, weather permitting. Under the direction of the Butcher and Executive Chef, this position works in all aspects of retail and production meat cutting and value-added production within the Farm Commons Barn on Philo Ridge Farm. They will be responsible for retail cutting, grinding, and packaging of meats raised on the farm and other partner farms. In addition, the assistant will, when assigned, work alongside team members to create farm-based value-added products. In this position, the butcher assistant will learn many facets of meat production from field to fork. The butcher department is rooted in nose-to-tail butchering, using as many parts as possible of the animal for retail or kitchen use. The butcher assistant will be eager to learn, bring creativity and have a strong work ethic to work towards and maintain the standards of meat production on the farm.

About the position:
Our vegetable team raises top-quality organic produce from seed to harvest + seedlings for urban farms. We have +12 acres in production, + two high tunnels for year-round production + a new wash-and-pack facility + a log-grown shiitake operation. We use cultivating tractors, water wheel transplanters, root harvesters and other equipment that help maximize efficiency. Cover cropping, soil tests and a fertility program helps keep our soils healthy and balanced.

Requirements
2 years vegetable production experience
Demonstrate record keeping ability
Tractor experience
Proficient at harvesting, weeding and planting
Ability to delegate responsibilities
Excellent record keeping skills
Ability to handle product from harvest to packaging while maintaining food safety (FSMA) standards

Responsibilities
Working with our team of apprentices and staff to execute daily tasks including:
Greenhouse watering and seeding, transplanting, crop maintenance
Pest and disease management
Implement and maintain irrigation
Harvest vegetables according to farm’s standards
Operate and maintain farm equipment as needed
Contribute to a safe and orderly working environment
Support record keeping

Our livestock team cares for grass fed beef cattle and pastured poultry (laying hens, turkeys, broiler chickens). Duties include collecting eggs, moving fences for rotational grazing, feeding and watering animals + weekly poultry harvest in high season.

Requirements
1 year livestock experience preferred

Daily chores
Collecting and washing eggs
Moving fencing and infrastructure for beef, poultry and goats
