Black Dirt Farm is an agroecological farm in Stananrd. We collect discarded food from off of the farm, which then kicks of a series of integrated enterprises on the farm, including raising laying hens for eggs and meat, making compost and worm castings, and growing crops. This Route Operator position will operate two of our food scrap collection routes. The Route Operator's task is largely conducted off of the farm, collecting discarded food from 15-25 customers each days (75-95 containers on average). We do this in a Ford 550 towing a 10-yard dump trailer equipped with a hydraulic lift that picks up and dumps the containers into the trailer. The Route Operator screens each container for trash, and washes them with a pressure washer. The Route Operator is a carbon-crusader, capturing food scraps to build soil with and bank carbon to prevent the further accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist Farm Manager with CSA member and wholesale communications (primarily newsletters and social media) 
- Assist Farm Manager to source high quality local products for our CSA, place orders with vendors, and coordinate delivery and storage logistics.
- Manage product inventory and storage spaces for crop quality and efficient work flow.
- Assist Farm Manager with CSA delivery builder- assess field crop availability, track product inventory, and build our custom packed CSA boxes with a diverse selection of products.
- Organize CSA and wholesale pick lists for accurate and efficient harvests. 
- Coordinate with Willing Hands to orient gleaning team to field crops for gleaning.
- Occasionally participate in additional aspects of food production including planting, weeding, mulching, pruning, trellising, harvesting, washing produce, and packing CSA boxes. 
- Be an active member of a small team to take on projects, solve problems, and work together.
- Assist in the farm kitchen making sauerkraut and other value-added products in the fall.

QUALIFICATIONS
The right candidate for this position will:
- be detail oriented and have strong written and verbal communication skills.
- have 2+ years prior project, account, or office management experience - we'd love for that experience to be on a farm or professional kitchen but we're open to various backgrounds! 
- Be open to a minimum 2-year commitment (preferred)

Position Description: Farm Intern
Full-Time: April 3th- October 27th, 7 months, At-will

Position Summary:
The Farm Interns assist the farm team in the care of the livestock, barns, and gardens and help administer program activities such as homesteading, food preservation, and farm work within the summer camps. Throughout the internship, the farm interns will learn hands on farm-based skills including but not limited to animal husbandry, herd health monitoring, pasture management, crop rotation, weed identification, various types of garden skills, farm enterprise analysis, and develop an understanding of community living. Using a beautiful wilderness and farm setting and innovative approaches toward teaching, organic farming, and environmental education, interns will become strong leaders by developing connections to each other and the land through work, service, and community.

Responsibilities:
• Farm Interns assist the farm team in the care of the barns, gardens, animals, and all other farm concerns such as craft areas, food processing, greenhouse, haying, and pastures.
• Undergo training throughout the season.

• Lead programs individually as well as co-instruct.
• During the summer camp season farm crew will ensure the health of the animals, gardens, and pastures and assist the farm programs at Firefly Song, Timberlake, Tamarack Farm, Red Spruce Grove and Barn Day Camps as needed.
• Assist with work related to opening and closing of camps.
• Share cooperative living chores with crew members including cleaning, cooking, and some group maintenance projects.

General F&W Responsibilities:
• Participate in opening buildings for season (spring) or final clean up (fall)
• Actively participate in the annual weekend events, such as Open House Weekend.
• Participate in crew life.
• Assist the Farm Director, Sustainable Resource Director, Conservation Director, and Executive Director with tasks as assigned.

We are a 25 acre, highly diversified (40+crops), organic vegetable farm managed by a team of 10 apprentices and experienced growers. We focus our production towards our bustling farmers markets in Washington D.C. To meet market demand, we strive to consistently produce high quality produce every week using season extension and succession plantings. We also sell many amazing veggies, fruits, and foods from our neighbors in the country.

With a 50-year history, we are constantly striving to improve our systems and be sustainable with regards to our soil and environment, our people, and our business.

Our apprentices are trained to manage a variety of crops and jobs on the farm. While apprentices spend a significant amount of time transplanting, weeding, irrigating, harvesting, and marketing, the primary role of each apprentice is to manage their areas of responsibility. Each person has the opportunity to engage in learning about organic vegetable production, marketing fresh produce, people/labor management, and problem solving. The farm is well developed and established, offering a great opportunity for beginning farmers to learn from seasoned experts.

Previous work on farms and/or outdoor physical labor is helpful but not necessary. Enthusiasm, work ethic, organization, communication, and willingness to work as a team are qualities that make for a successful apprenticeship. Compensation includes a monthly salary plus full room and board.

Honey Field Farm is a small family farm growing annual and perennial flowers for the garden, organic veggie and herb starts, and 12+ acres of organic vegetables in Norwich VT. We're hiring for multiple positions this year.
