We value a healthy work environment. The season starts with a paid all staff training day, so everyone enters the season understanding the full farm plan and operations. We offer paid time off and paid registration for educational workshops offered by NOFA-VT/ Rural Vermont/ etc. Our staff facilities include both indoor and outdoor eating areas, indoor bathroom with hot water hand washing sink, indoor shower, microwave, refrigerator, and staff lockers. Crew are provided work gloves, sunscreen, Bluetooth speaker for greenhouse seeding, and walkie-talkies (though most folks prefer to use their own cell phones for crew communications).

We produce seven acres of certified organic vegetables in Plainfield, Vermont for local and regional wholesale markets. We produce vegetables in a mix of row crop and market garden production, using a diverse range of tools, tractors, and equipment. We specialize in production of root crops and fall radicchios. We strongly encourage queer, trans, female- identifying, and BIPOC folks to apply. Tamarack Hollow is a woman- run farm and does not tolerate misogyny, bigotry, or disrespect based on identity, body type, or abilities.

Each day starts with a crew meeting to discuss tasks and break into teams. We practice a worker- led management style, where after discussion of the weeks’ tasks, folks break into teams according to their interests and strengths. We respect our employees time and stop firmly at 4 pm. Crew are not asked to work more than 40 hours a week, but will be paid time and a half if they do. Agreed upon hours will not be cut against the will of an employee (barring a major market failure or weather disaster), but employees are sometimes offered the opportunity to go home early if tasks are finished. Field crew are encouraged to develop new skills, learn equipment maintenance, and develop agricultural projects of their own.

Vegetable Production Crew: 3-5 days a week, May through October, opportunity for year-round employment. Agricultural experience is great, but not necessary for applicants that can demonstrate a good work ethic, eagerness to learn, and a great attitude. Main position responsibilities include greenhouse seeding, transplanting, manual weeding, and lots of harvesting. Must be cooperative, respectful, hard-working, detail oriented, and able to respond positively to feedback while learning our systems. We work Monday through Friday from 8- 4, with a 40 minute paid lunch break. Harvest days may start earlier during the high heat.Compensation: $15 hourly minimum starting wage for field positions- higher with experience and commitment.

We are a working homestead in Central Vermont. We are looking for people who are interested in continuing to help us create an educational homestead that teaches participants about a land ethic and finding humans' place within the ecosystem. The focus is on working the land based on this ethic. This includes eating and preparing food and making clothing bioregional (mostly from the land). We believe learning happens best with a little bit of instruction and a lot of repetition and hands-on practice.
We teach practical and sustainable homesteading skills through immersion programs, including apprenticeship programs and weekend intensives. Participants will help with animal husbandry (including milking), cheese making, low-impact gardening, making hay with a scythe, and wood-fired cooking. Additional skills such as soap making, natural dyeing, basket weaving, preparing wool, spinning, and knitting are also available upon participants’ requests.
Apprenticeship Program:
For those who are interested in a longer-term educational experience, the apprentice program may be for you. It involves immersion into the daily routines, work, and problem solving of a real homestead operation. We expect a minimum of a three-month commitment (with the ability for the apprentice to stay longer if desired), the results of which are a much more practical hands-on and day-to-day understanding of real and sustainable homesteading life.

Apprentices are expected to work 6-8 hours per day, 5 days a week, and on all homestead tasks in trade for room, board and educational opportunities.

Each apprentice will have his or her own primitive house and will share a communal structure where meal cooking will take place.

Weekend Immersion:
This is an opportunity to experience the homestead for a weekend, the principle focus of which will be cheese making, milking and whatever else the season has to offer.
We want to participate in the monetary system as little as we can, but hosting other people takes resources and energy, so we will ask participants/visitors to either work trade or pay sliding scale $80-120/weekend.

Currently accepting rolling applications for the 2023 kidding and farming internship. Things get rolling March 21st and will run the entirety of the grazing season (November-ish). In the past, this stretch has been divided up amongst a string of wonderful interns who stayed from 2 weeks (the minimum) to 2 months, and is customizable though preference will be given to those who can commit to longer time periods. The internship evolves over the season. The beginning is focused on attending births and caring for (feeding multiple times per day, mucking pens, assisting with disbudding and vaccination) the most darling bouncy baby goats you will ever lay eyes upon. As the season progresses you will have a chance to participate in other aspects of a one-woman, 40+ goat farm, from herd health to intensive rotational grazing to milking to assisting with processing skyr. Days are long -- 6 am to 7pm roughly -- but there are plenty of opportunities throughout the day for rest and relaxation. This is most assuredly not a 9-5 Monday through Friday type of deal. The ideal candidate is bright, hardworking, responsible/reliable, good humored, compassionate, curious, patient and observant. You must also be capable of lifting at least 50 lbs. This is a physically demanding job, no doubt about it! Promptness and the ability to see a task through from start to finish is required. No smokers, drug users or device addicts please. As with most things, you get out of this experience what you put into it — your curiosity and drive will be rewarded with an intensive crash course in farm business ownership, so questions are encouraged, as is the desire to immerse yourself fully in this life and lifestyle. Must have own mode of transportation. This position is unpaid but your hard work will be compensated with room and board (a beautiful private studio apartment, a weekly grocery stipend and a CSA membership to a local farm). this position works in many aspects of small-scale sustainable food production. Our growing
philosophy is rooted in the farm’s ecological mission to implement a regenerative agricultural
system. The Market Garden Crew will be responsible for raising organic vegetables, herbs, flowers
and fruit, including seeding, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, washing, packing, and various farm
maintenance tasks. The Market Garden Crew member will learn many facets of operating a small
farm including soil fertility management, crop rotation, weed and pest management, harvest and
handling protocol - all while being part of a multidisciplinary farm and food organization.
The Market Garden Crew members are dynamic thinkers, creative problem solvers, display flexibility
and possess a strong work ethic. As we enter the seventh season of growth for this business, PRF is
still developing and implementing systems, working on efficiencies and always innovating. It is
imperative that crew members have clear, open communication with one another and the Growing
Manager, a desire to learn, and the ability to remain engaged and motivated throughout the growing

Responsibilities

· Production: all aspects of organic production including but not limited to seedling
propagation, high-tunnel growing, harvest and washing for on-farm Market & Kitchen
· Field work: weed, pest and disease management, planting and cultivation, irrigation

· Operate on-farm equipment (walk-behind tractor, gator, manual transmission truck, etc.)

Philo Ridge Farm is a beautiful regenerative agriculture farm located in the small town of Charlotte, in Vermont’s fertile Champlain Valley. Using innovative, ecologically sustainable practices, we manage four hundred acres of healthy pasture land, forests and diversified produce gardens. We rotationally graze heritage breeds of livestock and grow certified organic fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Everything we harvest is processed and sold in our kitchen and Market, where we feature a changing menu of seasonal dishes as well as grocery and specialty housewares that showcase Vermont's local artisans and farmers.

This position offers full exposure to almost every aspect of livestock farming. The Livestock Assistant will work closely with the Livestock Team to gain experience in: the planning and execution of a management-intensive grazing operation for our steer herd, cow/calf herd, and sheep flock; raising broiler chickens from brooder to mobile range coop to the processing unit; and finishing pigs in a pasture-based system. The Livestock Assistant will also assist in on-farm hay production, cattle and sheep corralling and sorting, and farm based maintenance tasks. This position is ideally suited for a candidate who wants to see what it’s like to work in a diversified livestock operation.

This position will begin in April 2023 and end in fall 2023 depending on organizational needs and candidate availability. The Livestock Assistant role requires a time commitment of 40 hours per week, and occasionally more depending on seasonal needs.
