ABOUT THE POSITION

We believe it takes self-initiative, constant and thoughtful communication, a strong belief in the purpose/impact of our work, creativity, and love and appreciation for one another in order to accomplish the challenge that is diversified vegetable farming. We are currently seeking agriculturalists (or folks with experience in other related hands-on trades) who are ready to be a vibrant part of our mission to grow healthy and abundant food for our community in an ecologically conscious way.

As a member of our team you should expect to be involved in the day-to-day planning and problem solving involved in the operation of our farm. Together we grow vegetables and berries on ~15 acres in a given year while managing the fallow years for a remaining 15. In addition to our outdoor space we grow extended season crops in 10 high tunnels and produce retail vegetable starts for sale in conjunction with our Annuals and Perennials team. Our focus is on the full cultivation of the crops we grow at Cedar Circle, from seed to washed-and-packed product, and our farmstand team takes it from there.

One of the most exciting aspects of diversified vegetable farming is the variety of work involved. While specializing and honing skills in one particular area enables a farmer to take pride and ownership in the work that they do, having a varied set of responsibilities keeps the work sustainable, interesting, and engaging. Our team is always working towards a model that provides both of these experiences for all team members.

RESPONSIBILITIES

We are lucky to be in possession of many tractor-based cultivation tools that improve our quality of life and efficiency; however, we hold a reverence for traditional hand-based methods for their lack of disturbance, reliability, and connection to the land. We have a shop with a full time mechanic though times of peak demand may necessitate assistance from production team members who consider themselves mechanically inclined.

A non-comprehensive list of our day-to-day tasks is below.

Greenhouse, Propagation house:

• Seeding, thinning, watering, grafting, tagging and organizing (retail starts)

Greenhouse, In ground growing

• Season extension — Bed prep (BCS), transplanting, weeding
• Specialty crops — Lower and lean tomatoes, trellised cucumbers and peppers, etc.

Bed prep

• Tillage-based — Mowing, primary and secondary tillage, amending, mulched bed formation
• No-till — Mowing, tarping, roller-crimp

Weeding and pest management

• Hand weeding, hoeing, flame weeding, tractor based cultivation
• Deploying bought-in IPM
• Manual pest management (squish squish)
• Setup and removal of row cover

Transplanting

• Water wheel, bare-root

Irrigation

• Hook-and-latch overhead systems, lay flat and drip systems

Wash-pack

• Cooler management and ensuring proper storage conditions, ensuring rapid removal, cooling, and storage of crops during summer heat, washing/processing, quality control

Miscellaneous

• Outdoor trellis maintenance
• Farm maintenance — Organizing, moving, consolidating materials, etc
• Greenhouse maintenance
• Side-dressing
• Perennial crop maintenance
• Direct seeding
• Assistance with other departments (one-team mentality)

Harvest is an essential component of vegetable farming and our full season team works in conjunction with our teen ag program to pull off daily morning harvest. This provides an excellent opportunity to model efficient, skilled, and safe farming practices and to inspire up and coming agriculturists.

QUALIFICATIONS

• At least one season previous vegetable farm experience preferred (other work experience welcomed!)
• Small engine operation (e.g. string trimmers, irrigation pumps) experience preferred (willing to train!)
• Excellent time management skills
• Consistent attention to detail
• Positive, energetic interpersonal skills
• Clear, consistent communication skills
• Ability to work independently and within a team
• Flexible, creative, and able to perform well in diverse conditions and under pressure
• Ability to work for long durations in inclement weather – standing, sitting, bending over, or kneeling
• Interest to return for consecutive seasons is a huge plus!

COMPENSATION

This is a seasonal position, full-time May through October (other time commitments considered) with flexibility to work weekends during certain parts of the season. We try to stick to a 40 hour work week to the best of our abilities. The full season crew member is an hourly position with benefits including sick time accrual, fresh produce, and a discount to our farm stand. Salary range is $15-17/hr, depending on qualifications.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The role of the Education Lead is to assist in developing, managing, and facilitating our agriculturally and ecologically focused youth, family, and adult education programs. There is a strong focus on developing and delivering lessons and activities for our farm programs, of which our most popular is our summer camp.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Development and implementation of new and existing programs in conjunction with the Education Programs Manager (homeschool classes, preschool classes, family programs, teen cooking classes, summer camp, adult workshops, etc.).
• Working with the Education Programs Manager to create seasonal program curriculum, including lesson plans and educational materials for programs.
• Planning, implementation, and maintenance of the Education Garden throughout the season.
• Serving as Camp Director during the 8 weeks of summer day camp.
• Training seasonal education staff prior to the start of youth programs.
• Managing the Mentor In Training (MIT) program for summer camp.
• Supervising and supporting seasonal education staff and volunteers to ensure programs run smoothly.
• Providing a positive experience for parents or caretakers of children participating in youth programs.
• Collaborating with other departments at Cedar Circle Farm to lead or coordinate educational community programs.
• Assisting the organization in hosting fundraisers and events.
• Representing Cedar Circle Farm & Education Center at recruitment events, camp fairs, etc.
• Availability to work overtime during summer season, and occasional weekends for special programs / events.
• Other related assignments as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

• 2+ years of experience as an educator, in a classroom or outdoor setting.
• Additional experience in a related field, or combination of work experience and coursework.
• Experience developing curriculum and teaching about farming, ecology, or related subjects preferred.
• Enjoy building relationships with learners of all ages, from preschool through adults.
• Be inclusive and embrace diversity of all learners.
• Be proactive and self-motivated.
• Possess strong written and verbal communication skills in professional and educational settings.
• Be detail oriented and competent in balancing multiple projects and deadlines.

COMPENSATION

Sunrise Farm Job Openings - Now Hiring For 2024

General Farmhand - Two Positions Available

Position Description

The work at Sunrise is primarily focused on certified-organic vegetable production, though the seven-person Sunrise crew is part of everything from seeding vegetables to slaughtering chickens to maple sugaring to light carpentry. Our 400-member CSA is entirely on-farm pickup, so you will have a chance to interact with CSA members whether you’re restocking the kale or selling lamb sausage. The job is 40 hours per week, 7:30 AM to 4 PM with a half hour off for lunch. One position will be Monday through Friday and will focus somewhat more on vegetables than animals, and the second position will be Friday through Tuesday and focus somewhat more on animals. Both positions start in April and run through October. Housing in an apartment adjacent to the farm is available if needed.

 Qualifications

-We work in rain, sun, snow, wind, heat, and cold—preparedness and a positive attitude are essential for success. We also shift frequently from one task to another, so an ability to transition efficiently is important.

-We aim to work hard during work hours and then knock off at a reasonable time. You must be able to put in a solid eight hours of effort every weekday, lift heavy objects, and deal with whatever comes along. You also need to be able to work closely with other people, since most activities require joint effort.

-You don’t need to have prior farm experience, though that is helpful.

Dorchester NH--2024 Season

The Hummingbird Center is a wellness community that promotes ecological and spiritual health through land stewardship, organic cooking, yoga retreats, and outdoor recreation. We operate on multi-generational farmland in Dorchester, New Hampshire, practicing methods of permaculture to cultivate a vibrant, edible landscape. 

In the spring of 2024, we will provide meals to the public and to our retreat guests in our ‘Farm to Table’ restaurant, crafting seasonal dishes to share the abundance of our gardens and food forests. 

We are looking for a confident individual to join our community to ensure our gardens produce enough food to operate our restaurant, and to feed our residents. The garden manager will look after a multitude of perennial and annual plants spread over several acres of hilly terrain. As a Zone-5 farm serving food from May to November, successional planting and greenhouse growing skills are crucial. 

We are looking for a full-season commitment from our gardener. Candidates with multi-year interest will be favored. The appropriate candidate will be reliable, driven, an efficient problem solver, and able to navigate the unique landscape of community living. Prior experience in a rural lifestyle will be a strong asset. 

Goals and Objectives: 

● Start and maintain seedlings (vegetable and flower) onsite use in the restaurant and community kitchen 

● Plant and maintain gardens around the main building with flowers, salad greens, and herbs

 ● Grow vegetables in greenhouses and field space as necessary to supply HBC, meet community needs, and to stock farm store/outside sales 

● Maintain and expand the perennial crops; fruit tree pruning, sheet mulching, weeding, harvesting as necessary 

● Coordinate volunteers to complete all of the above goals 

● Communicate plans, needs, and questions to fellow staff 

● Assist with the hostel as necessary 

Month by month tasks: 

● February/March- onsite seed inventory, microgreens for house use and restaurant use, order seeds as necessary, make soil, begin seed starting, outdoor tree pruning. 

● April- continue seed starting, continue pruning, continue microgreens, begin prepping indoor growing spaces as necessary. 

● May- continue seed starting, begin outdoor bed prep/planting 

● June- continue bed prep/planting 

● July- maintain annual gardens, perennial maintenance, begin fruit/herb harvest & processing. Harvest garlic scapes. 

● August-November- Harvest garlic, continue annual/perennial maintenance, harvesting/processing as necessary. Plant garlic in October.

Weekly work expectations: 

● 40 hours/week garden specific work.  Please be aware that farming in New England is not a year round job and the work fluctuates with the season.  There will be weeks in the summer when it is necessary to work for more than 40 hours. Likewise, there are weeks in the winter when you will work less than 40 hours a week. 

● 1-3 hours/week household chores and cleaning in community building

● Housing and meals provided

● Salary will be based on experience; ranging from $600 to $2000 per month.
