Craftsbury Common, VT - More than 50 farmers are expected to compete in the 4th Annual NOFA-VT Farmer Olympics, to be held at Sterling College in Craftsbury Common, Vermont on August 8 from 4-8 p.m. Farmers will show off their skills in events that include a hay bale toss, vegetable harvesting race and a relay involving 5-gallon buckets.
We’ve been training all season for this,” said Gwyneth Harris, the farm manager at Sterling College. “It’s important to look up from the weeding and harvesting to have fun and share a meal with our fellow Vermont farmers, and then beat them at wiffle ball. We look forward to welcoming folks to the Rian Fried Center.” The Rian Fried Center for Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems encompasses the College’s farm and gardens, edible forest, orchard and sugarbush and provides 30% of the food consumed in Sterling’s dining hall.
Ten teams will be competing and judges include staff from both NOFA-VT and Sterling College. Participants and spectators are invited to campus for the games and to enjoy a farm-fresh meal from the NOFA-VT mobile oven. Side dishes and pizza ingredients are donated from Pete’s Greens, Cellars at Jasper Hill and Sterling College.
