Culinary Traditions and Seasonal Foods Highlighted for Agricultural Literacy Week

The Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont (NOFA-VT), in partnership with the Vermont Department of Libraries and the Vermont Agency of Food and Markets, had a very successful Agriculture Literacy Week that featured a variety of community events.  (November 18-24, 2019).

The events of this week-long celebration occurred across the state and showcased various Vermont cookbook authors, tastings, kid’s cooking and conversations with farmers. Every year we pick a different  agricultural theme and this year it was: “Celebrating Our Culinary Traditions”  focused on the seasonal delight brought to the table from our local fields.

What is really impactful about Ag Literacy events is that Vermont farmers are celebrated, communities gather and vital information about our working landscape, Vermont culture and heritage is shared.  Jason Broughton, State Librarian who attended the events helped us learn that:

“Libraries really value the information that is listed in books and resources. As libraries are reinventing how they are seen by the public, some may ask why are libraries changing their focus from just books. Libraries have long held the gateway to resources and information through access for all. Libraries now have many ways to access information through exposure, experiences, and events. An agricultural literacy or culinary literacy event allows Vermonters to not only hear and read about food, but how to prepare, taste, smell, touch, and enjoy a variety of food. This is just one of the many ways information is received by our body to understand and comprehend what we are experiencing. Libraries are the gateway to experiencing more than just books. They are a place for accessing experiences!”

As part of Ag Literacy Week, NOFA-VT is With local libraries and partner organizations over the years we have increased awareness of local agriculture and reach hundreds of community members statewide. We have created an activity, known as “Simple Suppers” is a small event bringing the community and farmers together to create and share the bounty of Vermont’s harvest. Through these the libraries engage community members in the theme by cooking a simple meal together, highlighting seasonal and local foods.

Even though Ag Literacy Week is over, NOFA VT will continue to help you can work with your community center or library to host a Simple Supper. For more details, contact Misse Axelrod, NOFA-VT Farm to Community Mentor, at [email protected] or call (802) 279-1548.
