About Us

Karmê Chöling is a Buddhist meditation center located in Barnet, Vermont. Established in 1970, Karmê Chöling offers mindfulness programs in a welcoming community setting for both new and experienced practitioners in Shambhala meditation. Our 450-acre property includes trails, retreat cabins, an organic garden, and a main building that hosts up to 60 residents. Residential staff form the heart of our community and commit to:

  • 35 hours per week, plus ~2 additional hours of community-related tasks
  • Attending weekly staff & community meetings and periodic staff trainings
  • Participating in daily meditation practice and cultivating a culture of kindness and mindfulness

Overview of the Role

Our one-acre garden has been managed organically for 35 years, producing vegetables, flowers, herbs, shiitake mushrooms, and berries. The Garden Manager will oversee daily operations and work closely with the Senior Garden Manager, supervising a full-time garden assistant and volunteer staff. This role is ideal for a skilled gardener passionate about organic farming, team leadership, and fostering a mindful, community-centered environment.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute garden operations, including seeding, soil prep, irrigation, weeding, organic pest management, and harvest.
  • Collaborate with the chef and other departments to meet the organization’s needs.
  • Supervise and inspire a garden team, including a garden assistant and volunteers.
  • Manage two greenhouses, oversee composting, and implement cover cropping for soil fertility.
  • Maintain communication and foster a welcoming atmosphere in the garden.

Qualifications

  • Formal training or equivalent lived experience as a gardener or farmer.
  • Knowledge of organic or regenerative agriculture principles and practices.
  • Strong communication and team leadership skills.
  • Flexibility with work hours, including availability during peak seasons.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Monthly stipend, commensurate with experience.
