Field Science Crew Member

Details

Land Care Learning, Inc. is advancing a scientific revolution led by land stewards committed to healing land, growing topsoil and increasing biodiversity. We provide a subscription service to organizations working to heal the land community that includes advanced environmental measurement instrumentation and quantified landscape function feedback that includes advanced environmental measurement instrumentation and quantified landscape function feedback including energy and water balances, biomass tracking, and soil mapping and characterization.

LCL is building out our field science team. This growing season we have been running a scientific program to collect primarily biomass and soil data on farms across Vermont as part of a satellite remote sensing system that tracks biomass, plus energy and water budgets in the plant-animal-soil-atmosphere continuum. We are partnered with farmers and other organizations to support development of farm management data collection and biomass tracking software. The data and work done this year will contribute to the development of the nonprofit’s landscape feedback “Measurement-Synthesis” system.

The Field Science Crew Member will:
Work under the Field Science Lead to conduct field work and data collection on farms
Use a variety of scientific instruments to collect data on soil, water, biomass, and energy
Support data management in coordination with other employees and contracted scientists as we develop environmental models
Support fall and winter planning activities for the 2023 growing season
Receive winter training and education in environmental biophysics principles and topics related to agriculture and land management - because of the timing of this position, training and education will be a significant portion of the role

The position is full time for six months (October-April) with current funding, with planned opportunity to continue the position through additional funding.

Salary for this position is $23,000 over the six month period with paid holiday, vacation, and sick leave.

Responsibilities:
Operate environmental biophysics equipment to measure water, energy, and biomass on farms
Support in transport and maintenance of instruments, forages, soil and other materials
Process biomass samples in the field and in the lab
Support deployment of advanced 3D soil mapping
Support in planning and coordination for future fieldwork
Support in data management and coordination with various scientists to develop environmental models

Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, natural resource management, natural/physical sciences or other related fields
