Bear Roots Farm Seeking: Assistant Farm Manager
Bear Roots Farm is comprised of 355 acres of mixed fields, woods, pastures and marsh resting between Barre and Williamstown VT. Bear Roots Farm is a certified organic vegetable farm, producing 20+ acres of vegetables, with an extensive 90+ acre cover crop rotation. We grow over 100 varieties of vegetables, herbs, fruits and flowers. We produce year round using high tunnel greenhouses and grow 100,000+lbs of storage crops. Our produce is distributed through our year round farm store, ”The Roots Farm Market,” in Middlesex, VT and through our regional wholesale distribution.
We are looking for an Assistant Farm Manager to join the Bear Roots Farm sta. The Assistant Farm Manager will work closely with the Farm Owner and H2A field crew to ensure timely and ecient daily operations. This position incorporates all aspects of the farming operation including wash room, field work, and administrative work. We are a small but ecient, productive team that works together to ensure the farm operates eciently. Our crew has over 60 years of combined growing experience. Ideally, we are looking for a long term commitment with the intention of, after one year, the assistant manger moving into the farm manager position.
Assistant Farm Manager Responsibilities
● Guiding H2A crew with tasks including: interpretation of seeding logs, field maps, daily objectives, and organization in the pack house
● Maintain and establish wholesale accounts, communicate with customers via email/phone and administer invoices using quickbooks
● Oversee wholesale and farm market packout including weighing and labeling of all products
● Communicate and coordinate with store sta
● Delivering to wholesale sites and our farm store
● Assisting farm owner with the production plan, field map, and seeding schedules
● Assisting farm owner with hiring & training seasonal sta

● Assist farm owner with tractor operations: field work (disc, plow, seed, spread, fork lift) & maintenance
● Assist farm owner with on farm projects that may include: basic carpentry, building high tunnels, & general repairs/maintenance
Qualifications and Qualities
Qualifications necessary:
● 2-3 years of vegetable production or horticulture experience with some management
experience preferred but not required for the right person
● Strong communication (oral and written) skills, positive attitude, solution-oriented
● Strong work ethic and excellent attention to detail
● Ability to share and accept feedback in a team environment
● Ability to use (or willingness to learn) Quickbooks & Google docs/sheets
● Passion and interest in working/learning about small-scale, low-input, sustainable
vegetable and herb production
● Ability to work eciently and eectively both independently and as a team member
with minimal supervision
● Ability to work quickly and eciently
● Have some experience working with or around tractors and equipment
● Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions
● 2-year commitment to the job preferred
● Ability to frequently lift 25-50 pounds
● Proper attention to equipment safety is a must
● Self-starter, self-disciplined, goal orientated
● Must have reliable transportation and be punctual
Compensation
Compensation package:
● $38,000-$45,000/yearly salary dependent on experience
● 1 bedroom, year-round housing with basic utilities included
● March 15-December 15th 40+ hours/week
● December 16th-March 14th 20-15 hours/week
