NOAP LogoThe National Organic Action Plan (NOAP) for the United States has recently been published. This excellent report describes the current status of organic in the U.S. and provides a concrete framework for the development of organic food and agriculture practices, programs, and policies for the next decade and beyond. The NOAP was developed through a series of grassroots meetings across the country and is intended to help people and organizations in their efforts to create a better future for organic agriculture in this country.

On February 12th the USDA National Organic Program announced long-awaited  grazing requirements for certified organic ruminant livestock.  Organic dairy farmers and farming organizations, including NOFA Vermont, have been advocating for over 5 years for a strict rule that would close loopholes exploited by large-scale, confinement dairies that were threatening the reputation of organic dairy products in the marketplace.  The USDA 'got it right' on this one.  National Organic Coalition press statement at, http://www.nationalorganiccoalition.org
