Basic welding and Fixing Rusted & Seized Parts

At the end of this training you will have the skills to fix equipment around the farm, house or business.
The first day focuses on basic welding skills. This basic metal inert gas (MIG) welding class starts with welding safety, a mandatory requirement for use of the Vermont Tech Welding Laboratory. This very hands-on, course will introduce students to MIG, Stick, and Oxy Acetylene welding techniques and will cover the basics including various types of metals and their properties as concerns welding, proper tank & pressure setup, what the ideal weld should look like, trouble shooting problem welds/weld areas, as well as examples of common items that require welding fixes.
All experience levels welcome although this course is targetted toward the beginning weldor or the needs of the everyday/farm fix weldor. Upon completion, students will leave with enough knowledge and enthusiasm to buy their own small MIG welder and continue practicing! Safety equipment is available but if students have their own they are welcome to bring from home: welding helmets, jackets, gloves, clear or shaded safety goggles/glasses, or any other welding safety equipment. Requirements for the course: solid, close-toed boots (preferably leather); long pants without holes; long-sleeve, high neck shirt (crew or colared); if hair is long, a method to tie it back away from face.
The second day will focus on fixing rusted and seized equipment. This training is not just about rust, it is a general survey of things people with machinery need to know about metal - "Metallurgy and Farmers." Part theory, part practice, this training will cover a wide variety of topics ranging from the science of rust to how and when to use brute force. Destructive and non-destructive techniques will be considered and attempted, and special techniques for dealing with catastrophes will be introduced. Other topics include include shop safety, identifying different kinds and grades of metal, specialty tools and their usage and other related topics.
