SUMMER VT FEED Intern

About VT FEED

NOFA-VT is a partner in Vermont Food Education Every Day (VT FEED), a statewide Farm to School project that provides food, farming and nutrition education programs in classrooms, cafeterias and communities. This multifaceted “3-C” model improves student knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors towards healthy eating and serves as a catalyst for rebuilding healthy food systems.

Position Description

Reporting to Amy Gifford, the VT FEED intern will assist in building support for summer meals sites around local purchasing and nutrition education. In addition, the intern will assist in the planning and conducting of the Farm to School Institute, farm to school workshops at the Child Nutrition Programs Summer Institute, and a culinary boot camp. All interns participate in our outreach program by staffing the NOFA-VT pizza oven at statewide farm and food events, providing Vermonters with an opportunity to learn about NOFA-VT and organic/local foods.

NOFA-VT seeks an individual with the capacity to:

  • Research and compile appropriate nutrition education activities for and information about incorporating local foods into summer meals sites.
  • Work with VT FEED staff to connect summer meals sites to local farmers and pilot nutrition education activities at sites, documenting efforts along the way.
  • Support local farm to school programs by cooking in school kitchens, conducting taste tests with students, and participating in farm field trips.
  • Provide support for developing a rationale, proposal, and outline for a VT FEED cooking cart manual.
  • Provide support for the development and implementation of the VT FEED Farm to School Institute in June (23rd – 26th) and workshops at the August (10th – 14th) Child Nutrition Program Summer Institute.
  • Provide support for the planning and implementation of the first ever Cook for America Lunch Teachers Culinary Boot Camp in Vermont (pending funding).
  • Have a flexible schedule with availability to work at some evening/weekend events for the NOFA-VT pizza oven.
  • Provide administrative support to Amy Gifford, NOFA-VT/VT FEED Local Purchasing and Food Service Professional Development Coordinator.

Garden Intern 2015

The garden intern assists with all aspects of planting, caring for, and harvesting food from the NOFA-VT raised bed garden. She/he will also be responsible for developing and coordinating activities at the garden and at local farms with children and youth groups and with food pantries for harvest, need and deliveries.  In addition, all interns participate in our summer outreach program by staffing the NOFA-VT pizza oven at statewide farm and food events, providing Vermonters with an opportunity to learn about NOFA-VT and organic/local foods.

NOFA-VT seeks an individual with the capacity to:

  • Complete basic garden tasks such as planting, weeding, harvesting, outside in all weather.
  • Reach out to food pantries to determine need and coordinate potential deliveries.
  • Work with the supervisor to plan plantings and keep records.
  • Develop and coordinate educational events at the garden, at local summer programs, and on local farms.
  • Flexible schedule, available for some evening/weekend events.
  • Market educational events at the garden and local farms to local community.
  • Write up garden and community experiences for the local papers.
  • Learn about NOFA VT in order to communicate about the organization at NOFA social events.
