Produce Safety: Best Practices from Field to Consumer
Monday, August 7, 2017 - 3:00pm to 6:00pm
With the passing of FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act) there has been concern from growers about compliance, regulations and if they qualify. This workshop is focused towards small to medium size growers and will demystify FSMA, focusing on produce safety planning. We will tour through the farm’s SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for practices from field to packing area bringing their CAPS (Community Accreditation for Produce Safety) plan to life.
Topics covered will include: recording compost & soil amendments, employee training, selecting harvest containers, cleaning the containers, pack shed design, produce-washing set ups, wash water testing & changing protocols, labeling of produce containers to customers, cold storage cleaning, recordkeeping & traceability.
Abha Gupta the Crops & Soils Coordinator for UVM Extension Northwest Crop & Soils Program will also discuss cover crop strategies such as integrating cover crops into a specialty crop management system, cover cropping equipment, and nutrient management. The goal of this discussion is to provide helpful soil health management tools that link to RAPs requirements.
