Sugarbush Invaders: Detection and Control, Tools, and Strategies
This workshop is funded by a Specialty Crop Block Grant and offered at no charge.
This workshop will discuss the most high-impact invasive plants (and insects – such as the Asian Long horned Beetle) found in our forested settings. Part presentation and part working demonstration, this workshop will cover: planning of treatments to address the invasives, tools available for that treatment, and use of a networking and data input system - the iMapInvasives Database - to input and extract infestation and control data. Gerry Hawkes, founder of Forest Savers, LLC, and co-presenter Mike Bald, founder of GotWeeds?, will demonstrate removal tools including: tractor-mounted implements, shrub pullers (the Wheeled Hand Tool System), and hand-held tools such as scythe, clearing axe, and flame weeder. Participants may bring a personal laptop to search the database. Please bring leather gloves and be prepared to walk. Continue the great conversations after the workshop at an optional BBQ (food provided, but chairs are limited, so please bring a folding seat if you have one).
