Introduction into Starting a Commercial Goat Dairy - this workshop is full

August 6, 2011 - 9:30am - 3:00pm

***This workshop is full***

This workshop will offer the basics for starting a goat dairy. Former Vermont Small Ruminant Dairy specialist, Carol Delaney will present how to create the foundation and set goals for working with dairy goats. Selecting goats, costs, housing, feeding, milking, and marketing will be covered including the decision for selling fluid milk or making cheese. A tour of a commercial farm and lunch with the farmer will offer time to experience an active operation and to get any questions answered. Please bring clean, washable footwear. Plastic booties will be provided. 300-acre Consider Bardwell Farm was the first cheese-making co-op in Vermont, founded in 1864. A century later, Angela Miller (among others) is revitalizing the tradition with goat milk from a herd of 100 Oberhaslis. Co-sponsored by the Vermont Sheep and Goat Association (VSGA).  Pre-registration is required to attend this workshop. Lunch included.
