Currant Production & Processing

Peter Hingston and family have been growing small fruits at Cherry Hill Farm since 1995. They have five acres of currants, raspberries and gooseberries, which they sell retail and as value-added products. They produce their own line of preserves and process and freeze fruits on-site in their on-farm processing facility. Peter will describe his production and harvesting methods, including his custom-built currant harvester, and give a tour of the processing kitchen. He will talk about the challenges and rewards of on-farm processing and developing markets for value-added specialty fruit products. Vern Grubinger, Vegetable and Berry Specialist with UVM Extension, will be on hand to provide additional information and answer questions. Presented in cooperation with UVM Extension, the Vermont Vegetable and Berry Growers Association, and USDA Risk Management Agency.
